You’ve heard it before. Someone says, “I’m a fifth generation Floridian.”; but what does that really mean?
Does it mean that their great-great grandparents moved to the state and was the first generation Floridian in their family?
Or does it mean that the person who said this was the fifth generation of their family to be born in Florida? The first one born here being a second great grandparent.
In your opinion, what does it mean to be a fifth generation Floridian? Please answer in the comments section below and please explain your answer. I have my own answer and rationale, but I would like to hear yours.

In my opinion it means that you are the fifth generation of your family to be born in Florida …. And I think the key word is Born in Florida

I think it refers to being born. My maternal grandmother was born in another state. My mother, born in Florida. I am a second generation Floridian on my mother’s side. My children 3rd.
My father was born in Georgia. So I am a first generation and my children a second on my paternal side.

Great site, Cindy. I say that I’m a 6th generation Floridian since 2 GGG grandparents born in FL on mom’s side. (On my dad’s 2 GG grandparents born in FL so 5th generation.) Maybe we should add a percentage modifier based on how many of those GGG gp’s are from FL, since we each have 32!
oldageisnotforsissies54 says
A modifier would be an interesting concept. By the way are you the Greg Driskell that used to work for Plum Creek? Thank you for commenting!

We would be one & the same. Looks like you’re enjoying retirement – the cattle drive would have been a fun outing, except for the rain.

So true about the Cattle Drive. It was an amazing experience that I wouldn’t trade, but won’t do it again anytime soon. Are you still in LA?
Greg driskell says
Yes, we’re still in LA, enjoying the redfish and crawfish.
