I just read where another Sierra Leone doctor lost his life to the Ebola disease. This is the fifth doctor to die there, and another example of how vulnerable health care workers are to this epidemic. We saw how easily the Dallas nurses were exposed while trying to care for the man who transported Ebola into our country.
The NBC News link about the latest doctor is below.
Doctor Dies of Ebola in Sierra Leone
I don’t know what any of us can do, except contribute monetarily and pray for these people. These doctors and nurses are placing their lives on the line, and we need to support them.
Of course, I’m not in big supporter of the nurse in Maine. Her prior actions in West Africa were selfless in nature and we are all thankful; but her recent actions in breaking the quarantine was selfish–plain and simple.
So I’m being selfish here myself in saying that it would be so much better for the rest of the global community if they could get this disease under control in West Africa before it has a chance to move elsewhere, but this article makes it clear that the West African health community is severely undermanned.
They really do need help.
On another note: Duke University Hospital is monitoring a Liberian who turned herself into the hospital with a fever on Sunday. She traveled from Liberia to Newark Airport on Friday, then boarded a bus for Durham County, NC arriving on Saturday. She is being tested for Ebola, and they should have test results this morning.
